Our Birds

Our Birds

We started a series of monthly columns about local birds in the Sequim Gazette in September, 2007. They normally appear on the third Wednesday of each month in the Strait Scenes section under the banner "Our Birds." With the Gazette's permission, those columns are reproduced here on the website, a week or so after appearing in the paper. Our versions follow normal bird-community rules of capitalizing bird names, whereas the Gazette follows the Associated Press style, which treats them as lower case.

Columns here may be slightly longer (new contents in brackets) if interesting material had to be trimmed to fit the space constraints of the Gazette. I didn't have room, for example, in my column on Peeps (Oct, 2007) to mention that I was wearing the dreaded white T-shirt, as I would have needed extra space to explain to a general audience why we avoid white when birding. My white shirt didn't seem to bother the peeps one bit. ;-)

Unless otherwise noted, Dave Jackson is the author of the column.
