Education

OPAS education programs have two major thrusts:

  • School programs include classroom visits for grades 2 and 3, and bringing students from grades 4 through 8 to the Dungeness River Audubon Center for a variety of "hands-on" learning experiences.
  • The River Center also offers an array of classes and workshops, featuring courses for beginning and intermediate birders.

Introduction to Birds and Birding. Three times a year -- starting in March, May, and September -- Dave Jackson, OPAS webmaster and frequent "Our Birds" columnist in the Sequim Gazette, teaches our popular beginning birds course, combining classroom discussions and field trips. Reserve your space early by contacting the River Center (681-4076). Limit: 16 people each session. See schedule.

Birds of the Olympic Peninsula. Bob Boekelheide, director of the River Center and our resident master birder, teaches a variety of intermediate-level, field-trip-oriented birding courses throughout the year, including: spring migrants, birding by ear, late spring migrants, gulls and early southbound migrants, and fall migrants. See schedule.
